Warning, spoilers ahead. If you do not wish to have any of the unlockable characters spoiled for you, I suggest you skip this topic as it mentions two unlockable characters and includes a video of said characters. If spoilers do not bother you, then please continue reading.
I was watching a video of a battle in Brawl recently and I've noticed a big change in the way scores and self destructs are handeled now. In previous installments of Smash Bros, a self destruct was awarded to a character who caused their own demise, either by jumping or falling off the stage (or walking off depending the stage), knocking themself off with an item, or by being taken out by a stage hazard after safely landing onto the stage and not being struck by another character prior being taken out by the hazard.
It appears in Brawl that the latter has been changed, which will severly affect how points are awarded in score matches. After watching this video ( www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oigf5d8Tqos# ), I've noticed that no matter how long a character has remained untouched after making it safely to the stage, a point is awarded to the character who last struck them before a stage hazard takes out said character.
It's happens from 1:22 to 1:44 in the video. During that time, Meta Knight goes untouched for 20 seconds before a lava plume sends him off the side (being struck at 1:42 and KOed at 1:44). Normally, this would be treated as a self destruct, however, in Brawl, Lucas was awarded the point despite not coming in contact with Meta Knight since 1:22.
To be frank, I'm not too pleased with this change, as it awards KOs to players who do not deserve it. For example, Fox or one of his clones (yes, Fox has more than one clone this time), could shoot an opponent, then dodge said opponent until the stage hazard finishes them off, and be awarded the point despite not bringing the opponent's demise in any way. It's one thing if a player fails to recover and is harmed by a stage hazard before making it safely to the stage, or if the KO was within proximity of being struck (say within 5 seconds or less), but after a long period of being safe on the stage and not being touched, no opponent should be awarded a point as they are nowhere close to being responisble for the KO.
